installing problem

After a reformat, using PartitionMagic because of problems with fdisk, I
decided to try out Win2000 which I have the opportunity to purchase at a
good price. I made the four setup floppies OK and everything went OK until
the 'win2000 is now installing devices such as the mouse and keyboard etc'.
at approx 50% of the way through, everything hung and nothing would get the
process completed.

I'm now back with WinME but would like to look at Win2000. Is there a
solution to the above problem??

It's not a brand name computer. I tried altering the bios but to no effect.
The progress bar just stopped at around half way, no error messages, no
insert CD now, nothing!

but did you check compatibility first?

If you enabled the bios 'boot from cd', you insert inst. disk and reboot
straight to the cd. There is no msg 'insert cd'

The compatibility check is against brand named computers isn't it? This
computer is a Heinz 57.

The BIOS does have the facility to boot from a CD. It's never worked, not
for Win98, Win ME nor Win2000. But Isn't Win2000 supposed to load from the
4 floppies, to the point where the CD is called for (if it isn't already in
the tray)?

Compatibility can be used to check any hardware installed.
There is also the question of any bios update that may be required.
If there is an option to boot from cd, ie enable cd as first boot device,
and this option, when selected, doesnt work it might appear that there is a
fundimental problem with yr sys.
You can use the floppies to commence installation process.
Have you tried installation process with bare minimum hardware?
Checked mb site for any updates required?

It loads either way - floppy / nofloppy.

Check your bios for proper boot sequence: CDROM/C/Floppy
Make sure that bios detects the CDROM properly (autodetect).

Have returned to ME for the time being but have taken comments on board and
will retry 2000 when the opportunity arises. I never have been able to boot
from an OS CD. I had to use a floppy for ME. Even when CDROM has been set
as the first in the BIOS bootup sequence, it just hasn't accepted it, ever.
Next box will be a new purchase with brand names and manuals for
everything!!
