Installing PCI card

I have just switched from dial up to broadband and have been using a USB
connection to the cable modem. I decided to install a PCI card so I could
connect to the modem using the Ethernet cable provided with my cable modem
thus freeing up the USB ports. I am having problems. Although the
installation of the card was supposedly idiot proof...it's not working!!

I put the card into an available slot in the PC, when I switched the
computer back on the new hardware wasn't detected like it said it would be
in the instructions and the card isn't showing up in the System screen.

I think it may be something to do with the set up of the computer as
originally the USB's didn't work on the PC either as they were disabled in
the BIOS or something (I have since switched them back on). As you can
probably guess, I am no computer genius so if anyone has any ideas as to why
the PCI card isn't working - simple explanations would be much appreciated -
please let me know!!!

BTW, this is the second PCI card I have tried to install but I put the
failure of the first one down to a fault with the card (someone gave it to
me and I think it was second hand). I am also using Windows ME if that
makes any difference

Thanks.

have you tried the add neww hardware wizard in control panel. Also go
to the manus website and get the drivers.

in the device manager ( control panel - system) is there a 'other devices'
heading in the list?
if so, remove all hardware that appears there
what is under 'network adapters'?

On-board devices share with PCI slots and sometimes interfere, depending on
the type of card. Try a different PCI slot.

I sent the original message about installing the PCI card (from a
different computer, which is why my screen name is different now!!).
In reply to some of your questions:

When I installed the card and the new hardware wasn't detected when I
re-booted, I tried the "Add new hardware" wizard but it can't find the
new hardware either. I installed the driver manually from the disc but
now every time I switch on, I get a (DOS looking) screen telling me
that there is no LAN device on my system and to install one,
errr...like... I'm trying to!!

I will look to see what is showing in the "Other Devices" but in the
Device Manager "Network Adapters" window there is NOTHING showing at
all.

To be honest, this PC was built by someone I knew but has really been
nothing but trouble. Nothing is simple with it. The USB ports were
installed, but not enabled which meant hours of fun spent trying to
connect various devices to the USB ports with no success until someone
told me what was probably wrong with them. Now for reasons that I
can't fathom, the computer can't find the scanner. Sheesh!!!

I will try moving the PCI card to another slot and see if that works!

Thanks. Jeannie
