installing new software

Certain programs will not install on my sony vaio. I load
them through the cd and they just keep going back to the
menu. Computer reads cd but won't install. This only
happens on a few programs such as Nortons
Systemworks,Software for my new dvd burner(Pacific
Digital) which is a roxio program. Am stumped, feel it is
a windows xp problem. running windows xp home edition.Can
some one advise me to the fix? Thank you
