I recently bought a new computer with XP Pro. My other
computer had 98SE and I used Kill It All to eliminate any
open running applications. XP calls
everything "Processes" and Kill It All doesn't work. Can
anyone help me with determing what processes I can safely
shut down? Or do I just shut down what is in the system
tray and install?

Joe;
Have a look here:
http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
Lots of good information on Services (Processes).
Don't use Ctrl + Alt + Del to End Process. Do NOT use "msconfig" to disable services,
type "services.msc" in the Run box instead. Or: To open Services, click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then
double-click Services.

The only ones you should close in task manager are the
ones with your name next to.Dont however close
explorer.exe.Bare in mind that if you have scanners
printers etc they will cease to work until you reboot.
If you need further assistance post back.
All the best.........

Stuart;
You would be surprised how little harm closing EXPLORER.EXE does. And it can be
easily be re-started again. Ctrl+Alt+Del/File/New Task (Run...)/EXPLORER.EXE/OK. My name
is next to NO running processes. Anything you shut down from Task Manager (that doesn't
bring up the dreaded RPC window) can be re-started again.
