installing .NET framework

I recently upgraded from 98SE. At one point I had
installed the .NET framwork on 98, but I then uninstalled
it. After I upgraded to XP it showed the .NET framework
as installed and I figured it had been installed by the
updgrade.

So I tried installing .NET 1.1 Service Pack 1 from Windows
Update a couple of times. It failed. Then I used the
Windows Install cleanup to get rid of the .NET framework.
I went to Windows Update and .NET 1.1 Service Pack 1 still
won't install.

Any suggestions? It's not so much that the .NET framework
is important, it's that if there's one thing you know
about that should be working and isn't, it means you also
have other problems as well.

I cleaned out the Windows Update folders so that the .NET
framework would redownload. It still doesn't install. No
error message, I am just informed that the isntallation
fails. I have downloaded all the other updates for XP
except SP 2 which I don't intend to do for a while.

Do you have a need or use .Net? Just because it is offered on MS Update
doesn't mean you need it. It may not install because it requires a
windows component like IIS installed to work. See if this link helps.

You are correct, I do not really need the .NET framework.
What really bothers me is that Outlook Express (which I
use a newsreader) has stopped working and I have been
tracking any glitch I find in the hopes that I might fix
something that will fix what I really care about.

Try an Outlook Express group you may find help just by reading posts.
Or post specifics about you problem. OE is included in Internet Explorer
and your version is 5.5 to select group.

The reason the service pack wouldn't install was simple, I had
removed the .NET framework and I had to reinstall the .NET
framework with a download separate from Windows Update.
