Installing Java 2 SE Runtime by policy

Hello there,

I would like to deploy Java 2 SE Runtime Environment using GP to assign it
to clients. Obviously I need the installation package as a .msi file in
order to do this. Does anyone know if this type of installation package
already exists and could provide a link to it?

Thanks a lot,
Tim Dimond.

Just extract the .exe ;-)

I think you mean "just extract the MSI" as explained in the link you posted.

It's also worth learning about the TRANSFORM, as you can set some nice
defaults before you send it to hundreds of computers. I think on mine I
managed to edit the TRANSFORM with the Office 2003 reskit, which saved
me all the hassle of ORCA etc.

Hm ... I would extract a compressed file to get the files inside.
Language problems :)

Hello Gerry,

Thanks a lot for that. I grabbed the .MSI and then used the ORK as you
suggested. I didn't have much faith in the ORK to be honest, but I carried
on regardless and it works fine! I have installed J2RE onto three machines
using GP now and they all worked fine so I have just updated the master
policy to install it on all of the machines the next time they are rebooted.
Let's hope I'm still this happy when I come into work tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Yes, the ORK is a nice hack, and it's a hell of a lot quicker than the
mumbo-jumbo MSI SDK.

I've installed it on 50 machines and 3 production servers, and they've
been running fine for months. I don't use Group Policy for deployment,
and there's no need to reboot machines after installing Java as far as I
know.

I'm pretty sure you can just blast new version over the top of old ones
too which saves a lot of time when Sun release updates.
