What happens if you just go to Add Remove Programs and remove the component,
reboot and add it back in again ?

Thank you for your help but i have another problem. When i click on
ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS it does not open, i get this message instead "
Setup library desk.cpl could not be loaded, or function display OcSetup could
not be found. ... error code is 0x7e".
Thank you for your efforts

Hey Slimane,

For the problem with opening your ADD/REMOVE window, the "DESK.CPL" file
maybe missing or corrupted.

- If you have access to another computer with Windows XP installed you can
copy the "C:\Windows\system32\desk.cpl" file from there and put it on to
your own computer.

OR

1) Make a temporary folder (called TEMP or whatever you want) on your local
computer and put it under the C:\ in Windows Explorer. So now we have
C:\TEMP

2) Get the Windows XP CD and use Windows Explorer to browse to the I386
folder.

3) Copy the DESK.CP_ file to the C:\TEMP folder you created in Step 1.

4) Click on the START button

5) Go to RUN and type --> cmd

6) Click OK

7) Type the following from the MS-DOS window --> cd c:\temp ; hit ENTER
to change to that folder.

8) Type --> extract desk.cp_ ; hit ENTER

Now you will have the DESK.CPL file in the C:\TEMP folder. Just copy/move
this file to C:\windows\system32. Just overwrite the orginal if it is
exists.

*********

In regards to your IIS problem, try this...

1) Click on the START button

2) Go to RUN and type --> cmd

3) Click OK

4) type the following --> regsvr32 C:\WINNT\system32\inetmgr.dll

You will get a small window prompt confirming that this DLL has been
registered. Just click OK.

I hope all this helps you.

Hi Craig, thank you for your help. I tried what you told me but it did not
work.
1) Regarding the Add/remove windows components, while following your
instructions When i type: extract desk.cp_ and hit enter , i get this
message:[ 'extract' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file].

2)Regarding the IIS problem, when i type the command: regsvr32
c:\WINNT\system32\inetmgr.dll and hit enter i get this message:
[loadlibrary("c:\winnt\system32\inetmgr.dll") failed - The designed module
could not be found]. I also tried 'windows' instead of 'winnt', i got the
same message.

thank you.

Hey Slimane,

Ok, I just re-read your original post, sorry I misunderstood your situation.

So the first thing we need to do is to get you access back to ADD/REMOVE
Components.

I found that the extract command is part of the Windows Support Tools.

Try this ....

1) Insert the Windows XP CD. Close the autorun menu that appears.

2) Use Windows Explorer and browse to SUPPORT\TOOLS folder

3) Double-click on SUPPORT.CAB and Windows Explorer (or whatever
application you use for file compression; ie WinZip ) will open the file.
You should be able to see all of the contents inside of SUPPORT.CAB.

4) Locate EXTRACT.EXE by scrolling down the list and draging it to your
desktop (for now).

5) Close the SUPPORT.CAB file.

6) Copy/move the EXTRACT.EXE to C:\Windows\SYSTEM32 folder.

7) now try my previous steps again from STEP 8 if you still have DESK.CP_
in C:\TEMP

Hi Craig, thank you. I followed your instructions and the Add/Remove Windows
Components problem is fixed. I appreciate your help.
Regarding The IIS install i tried to do what you told me last time. but i
got the same result (same error message). "snap-in failed to initialize,
name<uknown> and a CLSID number" , and on the console window when i try to
add the IIS snap-in it says"Snap-in creation failed".
Thanks for your help

No prob, Slimane,

Now for IIS,

If you go to CONTROL PANEL --> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS --> ADD/REMOVE
COMPONENTS ;

Do you see if IIS has a checkmark besides it?

If not, click the box to enable IIS and then click NEXT --> FINISH to
complete the installation.

Let me know how that goes.

Hi Craig. i'm just letting you know that I've already tried installing IIS
using the Add/Remove Windows components, with The IIS check marked. When I
try to add the IIS snap-in to the MMC this results in error messages i posted
in my previous response: (snap-in creation failed). I can see the folders
that are supposed to be created in the INETPUB folder. The only problem is to
start running IIs.
Thank you
