Installing IE 8

I want to know if it will be an advantage to download IE 8?
I am 81 and a bit wary of trying to installing IE 8 as I cannot get any
local help if things go wrong. I don't know too much about these things.

As far as I can remember I installed Windows XP SP3 on my computer after I
installed Internet Explorer 7.

Does this mean that I have to uninstall Windows XP Service Pack 3 before I
can uninstall Internet Explorer 7?.
I think I tried to uninstall Windows XP3 some time back but was told it
would be hard to accomplish successfully so I stuck with XP3..

If I get XP3 uninstalled safely, should I save the IE 8 download before I
install IE 8?
If I do not do this then how do I get to the download site?

I wouldn't recommend IE8 for you, chequer (and you know I know you).

Yes, should the need to uninstall IE7 arise. See
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/05/05/ie-and-xpsp3.aspx

NB: You do not have to uninstall IE7 before you install IE8 and IE8 can be
uninstalled if you've already installed WinXP SP3.

Again, uninstalling SP3 (and/or IE7) won't be necessary.
If I do not do this then how do I get to the download site?

Even if you uninstalled IE7, you'd still have IE6. (Uninstalling an IE
upgrade automatically returns the computer to the previous IE version.)

I will accept your recommendation and stick with 'the devil I know'
For curiosity I'll have a look at this web site.

I thought I saw somwhere, probably on the IE8 download page, that SP3 had to
be uninstalled before installing IE 8.

One of the many things I did not know

Nope, unless you'd (a) installed IE7, (b) installed SP3, and (c) wanted to
be able to uninstall IE7 before installing IE8 or after uninstalling IE8.
(Yes, it's a little complicated.)
