Hi Guys,

I have to install ONLY Excel 2003 on a handful of our company
computers.

We currently run Office 2000 throughout our company. We will not be
ready to deploy Office 2003 for quite a while.

Can you please tell me the best way to install ONLY Excel 2003 on
these computers (which already contain the Office 2000 installation)?

The users do NOT need to use any of the Excel 2000 program.

Here are my options as I see them:

1. Install right into default location c:\program file\microsoft
office
My concern here is that it will also overwrite my "common files" and
basically interfere with normal Office 2000 operation.

2. Install in a separate directory like c:\excel2003
I tend to favor this option because it separates the two versions.

Thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon!

Where you are installing only Office 2003 it will be best to uninstall
Office 2000 first. If at a later date you want to get Office 2000 back you
should uninstall Office 2000 and then install Office 2000 with all updates
before re-installing Office 2003.

Where you are installing Office 2003 and you want to retain both, it is best
to name a separate folder under Program Files for the Office 2003.

I don't think that you need worry about losing common files but to be on the
safe side, I'd back up Personal.xls. Excel.xlb Normal.dot and watch for
other backup suggestion that are made.

Unless you have space issues, I don't know why you wouldn't install it as well
into a different directory. Maybe they won't have to use 2000, but if the rest
of the org is on 2000, then I'd want both just in case. If there is any chance
of these guys developing anything that may have to run on any of the other
machines, then they should check it in 2000 first before deploying. I guess I'd
just rather have the option, but if you don't need it then you should be able to
simply install Excel 2003 right over Excel 2000, leaving the rest of the Office
2000 install alone.

Hi Ken!

I'm in full agreement with you there. But now that hard disc drives are so
cheap, there really shouldn't be any space issues.

Just install it to a different directory and it should be fine.

Hi Guys,

Thanks much for the suggestions. I think we will proceed by
installing in a separate directory within Program Files.

Thx,
Jon

Hi Jon!

Sounds like the way to go. Report back with any problems. New Versions
always take a bit of getting used to and some of the new facilities
you'll probably want to disable.
