Installing driver when you don't have a CD

D

Dave Neve

Hello

I have to help a friend who has lost the sound on his XP Family computer
after doing an update.

Thing is he doesn't have the CD as the program was installed at the factory
(he bought the computer in a shop)

I've no experience of this type of installation.

Where/how to I find the installation and what will I probably need to do to
install the driver again?$

Thanks in advance

Hi
He should have a CD for the motherboard drivers etc that came with the PC
the audio drivers should be on that.
If not, contact the shop and Demand they supply one.

You will have to give more information about the onboard audio here,
if you want anyone to point you in the right direction to download the
drivers.

un-install the device in device manager and reboot .. new hardware will be
detected and most likely installed automatically ...

if not .. well let wait until you have tried that

Download and run Belarc advisor. It will give some information on the
sound system. Then go to that device manufacturer's web site and
download the driver from there.

Lots of ways, all are easy (or difficult) in there own way.

He has his Windows XP install CD? It may be possible using that- but was it
a major update like SP3?

Best is to get a copy of the motherboard install CD from the maker.

Or identify the board and go to the makers website and download the files
.......

It hasn't been set on mute has it? Seen that one, as well as the speaker
plug into the mic socket.

NORMALLY (meaning not always), if you
1 go into the Control Panel to the
System icon,
2 then go to the
Hardware Manager button,
3 locate the Sound device,
and

4 DELETE the Sound device
(thereby deleting whatever driver (likely corrupt)

Then reboot the computer,

Windows XP is a good enough OS that it will reinstall the
sound driver automatically. One of the things that is
contained in the Windows XP OS is a myriad of drivers.

XP will NORMALLY do a system run through and install all the
needed (not necessarily the most current) drivers.

Once you are back up and you have sound, sign up at
Microsoft (just go to Microsoft.com)
for "Automatic Updates", and Microsoft will send their
gremlins to your friend's computer periodically to examine
the system and update the drivers.

Good luck.

Rocky Balboa recommended "Belarc" as a system diagnostic
tool.

You can also go to www.download.com

Download Sandra,

which is a HUGE free application, which will give you not
only a major system check, but will also tell you what
upgrades you can do on the computer, and also what is not
working as it should, and what needs to be tweaked in what
ways.

Good luck!

It's not a good idea to get driver updates from MS. Only update drivers
if there is a problem the driver will fix or the new one has a feature
you must have. And then only get them from the device manufacturer's
web site, the OEM's web site if it's installed by a large OEM such as
Gateway or Dell, or the motherboard manufacturer's web site. The
drivers from the MS update site are often times problematic and not the
most recent either.

Did you forget the link? It's SiSoftware Sandra and not any better than
Belarc.
