Installing downloads - XP Home edition

I have success fully downloaded some free software and istalled it - EG free
AVG etc.
Conversely, I have recently downloaded Zone Alarm (free edition) from the
internet, and see that the exe. files are on my C-drive. (I am using using a
Sony PCV Z424)However, they do not install and activate the programme either
when I double click on the exe. programme or try via the Control Panel.

Similarly on some CD-ROMs that install fine on my XP Professional Dell
Latitude 600 laptop, they simply freeze on the initial installation window
("Please wait..."). Not only that, the whole computer freezes and has to be
turned off manually.

Any ideas please?

(Presuming you have the necesary permissions to install software:) Try
temporarily disabling your antivirus software.
