Installing Adobe Acrobat 6.0 standard

I have Windows XP professional installed and when I try to install Adobe Acrobat 6.0 standard I get an error message that says windows installer service cannot be accessed. I have tried to install in regular mode and VGA mode and get the same message. I have also copied the installation CD and tried to install from the file saved on my hard drive but can't install this way either. Any suggestions?
Is there a windows installer service on XP which could be corrupted? If so, how do I correct this?
