Installing a new XP

I built a new computer with new CPU and Mother Board, etc. The old computer
had Windows XP installed. I transferred the old HD to the new computer
hoping I could reinstate the Windows XP. After calling the toll free
number I find that the license agreement on the old computer was not
transferable. Bummer!
I bought a new copy of XP and want to install it. Can i simply install the
new XP right over the old XP? I would like to keep the files I have on
the old HD drive if possible. Thanks for any help.

i believe that you have to format your hard drive in
order to re-install any version of windows after putting
XP on....
Windows XP is ment to be the best of the best and bug
free. so it had no purpose to be reinstalled. true, newer
versions of windows will come out, containing a patch
which will install over XP
till then, Backup what u can, an re-install
