installer problems windows xp

I'm an XP newbie and I installed the home edition sp2 a few days ago on a 64
bit
system (athlon 64 X2 3800+ 1GB RAM 250 GB disk). All went smoothly.
Now the problem: a lot of packages that I download fail during installing.
Examples:
1). I downloaded a copy of the game "Thief 3, deadly shadows". After the
download, which was successful, I tried to install but got the error
message "could not initialize installation. File size
expected=1143938619,
size returned=1143114483"
2). I downloaded Maya personal learning edition from autodesk.com and
when I tried to install it got the error message: "error 1335, the
cabinet
file Maya.cab is corrupt and cannot be used"
3). Also opera failed to installl with the "cabinet" error message, but
.... when
I used the "classical setup" from the opera site installation was
successful.
4). Firefox failed to install with a data error message during unzipping
(with
7-zip).
5). I tried to install new versions of Windows Installer ... same sort of
problem.

Some other peculiarities and facts that might be of interest:
1). In IE I get on a regular basis the yellow message bar complaining about
ActiveX controls that should be installed. Each time I click in the
bar to
install them, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
2). A firefox copy downloaded using opera was able to install
3). Some WindowsInstaller packages (version 3.1 e.g.) from Microsoft do
not have a digital signature, which strikes me as odd.
4). I have windows firewall switched on
5). I have an adsl multi pc modem/router: speedtouch 510, which has a
built-in firewall

Question: how can I make windows installer work?

Did you install chipset and other hw drivers from the manu sites / cd's
supplied with mobo?
If you have installed chipset drivers is it Nvidea? If you have Active Armor
enabled, disable it.

Yes, indeed I installed the hw drivers from the cd supplied with the
mobo (ASUS A8N-E).
If you have installed chipset drivers is it Nvidea? If you have Active Armor
enabled, disable it.

The drivers are from NVidia and NVidia firewall was installed too.
I have removed NVidia firewall (supposing this removes Active Armor too)
and after downloading Windows Installer 3.1 again I could successfully
install it.
So that went well.
Next I tried opera; downloaded opera 9 setup and launched installer. This
was not successful, but now the failure is different from previous time (some
cabinet file corrupt). This time the error was like: "runtime error <program
path> abnormal program termination" (from C++ library).

Next I'm going to try the maya download. But since it's a long download it
will
be for tomorrow. Keep you updated.

In the mean time, thank you for your help DL.

Hello again.

I don't know what happened yesterday, but apparently NVidia's
network manager was not (totally) uninstalled. This time I made sure it was
and now all downloads I tried thusfar can be installed without problems
(Windows Installer 3.1, Opera, Maya learning edition, Quicktime, iTunes). So
I think your suggestion was right on the mark! Thanks again :)
