Installer gone berserk ?

I have a very bizarre problem in XP (latest). Sometimes when I launch a
program, or sometimes I only need to launch a dialog within a program, the
Windows Installer is launched. I have to continually cancel the Installer,
and eventually the operation succeeds. It's become very common, and is very
annoying. I don't even know where to begin to investigate this problem
(already looked at the knowledgebase). Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

It depends on which program. Office is known for this.

Doesn't seem to be any program in particular. Definitely not Office.

My Office 2000 is doing this in XP because it knows that
WinFax is here somewhere and keeps trying to install that
module.

I've been trying to find my info for WinFax 10 reinstall
but until I do it's drivng me crazy--every time I open
Word or Excel, off it goes and then ends with an error
message.
