information about your computer so it is hard to tell what you are dealing

The computer in question is a VYE S37B, which comes preloaded with Vista Home
Premium. The computer does not have a cd drive so to install windows XP Pro
could i install it off an external USB CD/DVD drive?

Came with Vista, is new - call the manufacturer/read the manual/look in the
BIOS/try it...
Chances are with you that it will - chances are against you that the proper
hardware drivers will be available to work with Windows XP.

I don't think so because you have to be able to boot the computer with the
cd. The cd drive would have to be connected to an IDE or SATA connector in
order to do that. The issue isn't being able to read and write to an
external cd drive but booting with one.

Have you gotten XP drivers from the website at
http://vyepc.com/?sec=3&page=6 and saved them somewhere besides on the
computer itself? You won't even be able to get on the internet without the
drivers and will be stuck if you just install XP. I suspect that XP would
have to be installed over a network by the manufacturer.

I suggest you contact vye at (e-mail address removed) and ask them how XP can be
installed on this mini convertible computer. Also ask them whether you can
get a cd drive that will let you boot from a cd. They do not offer one
under accessories.

If the computer supports booting from external USB devices, yes.

However, if you have a new computer with an OEM installation of
Vista, there could be a couple possible adverse repercussions of which
you should be aware. First and foremost, if the specific computer model
in question was designed specifically for Vista, there may well be no
WinXP-specific device drivers available to make the computer's diverse
components work properly. Consult the computer's manufacturer about the
availability of device drivers. Secondly, removing an OEM-installed
operating system and replacing it with another will almost invariably
void any and all support agreements and, sometimes, even the warranty.
You would, at the very least, have to re-install Vista before getting
any support from the manufacturer. Again, consult the computer's
manufacturer for specifics. Thirdly, there may be the additional cost
involved in purchasing a WinXP license for this new computer. (An OEM
CD and license from some previous computer will not do, for legal and
usually technical reasons.)

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then, assuming you were successful in obtaining WinXP-specific
device drivers so that the computer can be made to work with WinXP, the
backed up data can be restored and applications (those that are
WinXP-compatible, that is) re-installed.

Then they may have gotten lucky or the manufacturer may have stayed/gotten
wise. ;-)

Neither. The VYE S37 and S38 lines have shipped with XP preinstalled in the
past. Because of the 800Mhz cpu and 1GB of memory most reviewers have been
recommending the XP versions. VHP is slow without at least a memory upgrade
to 2GB and a long list of optimizations.

However, it is a mini convertible and has the limitations of one.
