Installation stuck

I'm trying to install from CD. The system is set to boot from CD first,
then hard drive. At bootup, it says "Press any key to boot from CD",
and after that, it says "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware
configuration", and right after that it freezes. The message disappears
and nothing further is shown on the screen.

The installation CD is not defective - it works on other systems. I
have tried installation CDs for other versions of Windows and they hang
too. The CD drive is not defective, but I did swap it out just in case
- same issue. Interestingly, I can successfully install a Linux OS from
CD on the system, but all Windows CDs fail this way. What might be
causing this?

It's working now. I put in a new hard drive and had no problems. I
wonder why it didn't like the other drive? Linux seemed fine with it.
Also it was working in my previous system, although only as a secondary
drive.
