installation problems on new hard drive

Old HD quit working. Had XP Pro. Couldn't fix it. Bought new Seagate HD and
XP Home (XP found online). XP installed but wouldn't start because of error
msg:
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: framebuf
If this is the first time you've seen this error screen, restart, if this
screen appears again, follow these steps:
The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates
problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the
hardware incorrectly.
Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates."
Then it gave tech. info. The HD came with a diagnostic CD which I ran, I
called Seagate tech support, not their fault-windows problem, formatted and
reinstalled the XP 4 times using all formats (fat32,ntfs,etc.). Still get the
same msg. I'm not a stupid girl but this has me stumped!
Anybody out there have any suggestions?

If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want to boot
the Windows XP CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows XP driver for your drive controller
in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows XP Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network.

Pressing F6 will get you nowhere,F6 option is for a RAID or SCSI
installation
(controller & driver) and will require you to install from a floppy that
you dont
have,as its not required for a IDE controller.Try booting to xp cd,select r
for
recovery,(disreguard the text displayed for entrance),simply type:DiskPart
In DiskPart,delete all partitions,create one,then press ESC key,option
1.Type:
FORMAT C: /FS:ntfs When its thru type:EXIT Restart to xp cd,install
xp.Option
2.Type EXIT,boot to xp cd,install xp as outlined. Also, make sure youre hd
has the
jumper pins installed correctly (master/slave)....

False information! F6 applies to any drive controller that is not natively
supported regardless of type. See this article for details.
