Installation problems from XP Home to PRO

I haven´t seen this one anywhere. I have bought a new computer with XP home
pre installed (XP Pro was not an available preinstall option). So, I also
bought a copy of XP Pro from a different store. Now when I try to install XP
Pro it tells me my Home version is newer than the Pro version and dire things
will happen if I proceed. The store won´t take back the program saying the
package seal has been opened.

I don´t want to lose my investment in XP Pro. Must I wipe out my harddrive
in order to install this older version of XP Pro on this computer. How will
that affect the functionality of my new laptop if I do wipe out the hard
drive (HP pavillion zv5450)? It came with a lot of HP installed support
programs. Have I been hoodwinked into buying a product that is more trouble
than it is worth? I appreciate any help both technical and personal
experiences. I couldn´t find this one on HP or Windows online customer
¿service? not without a $$ charge anyway, something that rather disagrees
with my concept about customer service. Thanks.

There are at least two possibilities:
#1 is what I suspect in your case.
1. Windows XP Pro is OEM, you can only perform a Clean Install with OEM, no
upgrade capability.
2. Windows XP Home has Service Pack 2 and the Pro CD has no Service Pack or
SP-1.
The difference in service Pack is seen as a downgrade and can not be done.
Slipstream SP-2 in the Pro CD:

You can then upgrade with the slipstreamed Windows XP Pro CD

Haven't seen that one anywhere means "didn't search".
If you installed just your new Windows, you would undoubtedly lose all
applications you do not have the installation media for.
Were you "hoodwinked"? No, you were uninformed.

You need to either slipstream/integrate SP2 into your XP Professional CD or
take that CD back, get your money back, and ask for one with SP2 already
integrated into it. Your version of XP Home is SP2 or above. The CD you
bought to upgrade is SP1 or below. You cannot upgrade an SP2 system with an
SP1 or below CD.. It's that simple.

I suggest slipstream/integrating SP2 and burning a New CD..

The XP on your computer has Service Pack 2 installed and the cd you got from
the store only has SP1. This is easy to fix.

Download Autosteamer from http://www.autopatcher.com/autostreamer.html and
install it.

Download the Network version of SP2 to your desktop from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
(paste into your browser address bar, removing any spaces)

Run Autostreamer. Put the cd in your drive. Autostreamer should just find
it.

Tell autostreamer where the SP2 download is.

Tell autostreamer to put the resulting .iso file on the desktop.

When autostreamer finishes, copy the .iso to a cd with Roxio or Nero. It is
already bootable, so don't use the Roxio or Nero "make bootable" function.

When done, turn off your antivirus scanner and open the cd by double
clicking on its icon in My Computer and click the Install.

Thank you Colin.

That was very helpful. I now have XP pro installed. Now if I could only
figure out why Norton won't install of the application recovery disc. I tried
the various online patches and downloads but I keep getting an installation
failed message. Diagnostics says its an Internal error 2753.
