Installation on other computers

Okie, I know with the XP activation thingy, you can only
install the software onto one computer. But what if my
old computer break down or I realise I need to get a new
computer just after I've installed XP (and activated
already) on my old computer. Does this mean the $1000 I'd
just spent on buying XP softwares would be wasted?

No. It means you got to phone MS to tell them what your doing with your
hardware. Then they'll activate you if they like your story. The
simplest thing to do is tell them that you did a major upgrade, but
don't get into specifics.

$1000 for XP? Did you get an extra zero in there?

The answer depends on whether your copy of XP is a retail version
or an OEM one. If it's a retail version, you can certainly move
it to a new computer; all you need to is remove it from the old
computer first.

However, if it's an OEM version, its license ties it permanently
to the first computer it's installed on. It can never be legally
moved to another. If the computer dies, the license to use XP
dies with it. This is the biggest disadvantage of OEM versions.

If the XP came with the computer, effectively as part of it, then it is
licensed solely to that computer, and dies with it

If it was a copy you bought retail, not as an OEM component with
hardware, then you can install on a different machine after removing
from the first - as often as you wish (you might get questioned if you
put it on a new different machine each week). See more at
