I formatted a patition on my hard drive as fat 32 and
copyed the i386 folder from the xp CD to it using xcopy. I
then ran winnt.exe from that folder it goes through and
completes this and say remove any floppy disks and restart
your computer. so that setup can continue.
Computer restarts and say would you like to install
windows i say yes , the EULA comes up and i pressed F8
then sel;ected my formated drive and said install. setup
starts copying files that appear to be the same as the
files copyed when i ran winnt.exe before. it get to about
42% and say it cant copy the file and to check that the cd
is the correct CD.(you can skip file of try again)if you
choose skip file it then does this for every file until
about 67 when the setup programs stops and says it is
preventing further damage to my computer and i have to
turn it off. (note if you press retry nothing happens.)

Any help would be much appriciated.

Boot from the Windows XP CD, and start fresh. Delete the primary
partition, and set up a new primary NTFS partition. Run the Windows XP
Compatibility Check to ensure that you'll have no problems with your
hardware or software, and if so, address these before installing Windows XP.
If you have the Upgrade version, you will need your old Windows 98 or Me CD.
Don't copy the Windows files from the CD to the computer. Let Setup do
that. Run the operations from the bootable CD.
