Installation of SP2 fails

I have XP Home Edition and was trying to install XP SP2-
RC1. I had disabled antivirus and the firewall as per the
instructions. But the installation stop responding after
nearly 1.5 hrs and did nothing. I checked the task
manager and update.exe was consuming 70% of CPU time.

Though I killed the installation, I have found no
negative impact on my machine, infact it has fixed one
problem where my windows explorer.exe used to crash after
every boot. Has anybody experienced this before?
