Installation of an extra harddisk

Olof Olsson

I have installed an extra harddisk, but it does not get
any letter, like "E" or "F". When I go into "this
computer, the new harddisk is not shown, Byt it is shown
in system information as a disk unit. There it says that
the unit is not initiated. How do I get it initiated?

Best regards

Hi,

Right-click "My Computer" and select manage. Use the disk manager to create
a partition on the new drive by right-clicking the available free space.
Until you partition and format the drive, it will not be usable for data
storage.

A new disk needs to have a 'partition' (or more than one) made on it,
then formatted for use. In XP, go to Control Panel - Admin Tools -
Computer Management, select Disk Management and look lower right for the
graphic of the drive. Right click in 'Unallocated space' and create
partition. Before doing so make sure whether you do want to have it in
one such piece, or to split in two (to have two letters) - much easier
to get it right now that have second thoughts later
