Installation Hang

Hello all, it's my first post, and after some minor poking about this seems
to be the pbest place to ask.

I've just recently bought an OEM copy of WinXP Pro at a local retailer [why
is everyone selling this right now?] and went home to try and install it on
my comp. I'm running an AMD Athlon 2400, with 1gig RAM, GeFroce 440 mmx, a
24x DVD/CDR, and a 80gig and a 150gig hd...

I'm able to install just about any brand of Linux on the comp but Win XP
hangs on the VERY FIRST [and I'm going from memory here] "Gathering system
information", right after it says that the screens go black and it just sits.
I've rebooted, I've left it, I've offered small animals in sacrifice, I've
cried, I've removed RAM, I've removed HDs, I'm about to through in an old
VooDoo 2 video card to see if that may be it...

Does anyone know what may be happening?

Oh, and before I forget, the HD now has Suse Linux 10.0 running on it [I'm
also running Knoppix from time to time now] without a problem. However I'd
really really like to get XP pro up and running.

If, repeat, IF I remember things as far as OEM is concerned - it will only
install on a totally clean hard drive. So, you're attempt to install on a
drive with Linux is probably why it fails.

Also, support for OEM version is to be provided by that vendor - not
Microsoft.

Yeah, thats what I figured. I've managed to get my hands on a copy of XP Pro
[regular] in hopes of being able to wipe the HD down to a Format /mbr and
then throwing in my OEM copy....

Hopefully that'll work. If not do you guys think that I could install using
the regular copy and using my OEM key? Or would there be an issue from
Micro$oft about me using a regular disk to install with and using an OEM key?

You must use your OEM Product Key strictly with
the Windows XP OEM CD and no other version.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Carey,

Do you think I should format to NTSF or do you think I should simply run a
format /mbr

?

I'll be unplugging the extra HD and my printer during the attempt to install.

Follow the procedure to delete all partitions,
create a new partition, then format the new
partition NTFS.
