Installation file extracting to wrong drive

when i try to install KB923689 (IE7-windowsXP-x86-enu.exe) update or other
microsoft updates, they all try to install to the wrong drive. None will
install to drive "c". I cannot get updates from the update website.

The files extracted to I:\31eba023968184d75b until an error message: "The
system cannot find the file specified". The file: update\update.exe

I removed both removable drives and it now extracts to drive "D" and i
receive the same error message.

I am running Windows XP Pro sp2, fixed drives "C" & "D", removable drives
"N" & "I".

I tried copying the update.exe from another computer, but everytime i try to
put it on the computer it disappears.

Any help would be appreciated...

AFAIR the place where hotfix is extracted before installing does not
meter. Probably it's extracted to the drive with more free space.
