Only by formatting the drive and starting over (unless it was installed
as an upgrade of 98 and system files preserved against a possible
uninstall)

Thanks Alex

Could it be done if I use PartitionMagic?

Provided the XP is on a FAT 32 partition you could use PM to make a
second one to install the Win98 on (Doug Knox has the method on his
site). Or better, make the second partition and use the Boot Magic that
comes with PM to dual boot between them. The file system used for XP
then does not matter. Or use BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com
($35 shareware - 30 day full functional trial)
for both purposes (which is the tool I use)

I had, perhaps mistakenly, thought that the aim was replacement of the
XP by 98, rather than having both available

Just for reference, the write up for installing 98 after XP is installed is
at www.dougknox.com and go to Win XP Tips

For Win9x/Me: Install 98/Me after XP is Installed.
For Windows 2000: Install Windows 2000 after XP is installed.
