I need to install Win 2000 on an external Maxtor usb/firewire hard
drive so that I can boot from either WinXP on the internal HD or from
this external HD with Win 2000. The bios of the Dell Optiplex GX620
allows for boot from usb CD drive. The Win 2000 system needs to be able
to see a SCSI card on the motherboard.

Any ideas whether or not this is possible?

Use two SCSI drives. One drive with WinXP and the other with Win2K.

Using the SCSI BIOS HotKey you can then select the drive you want to be the boot drive.

This is the *best* way to do this albeit not the cheapest.

Not sure about Firewire's Bootable capability, but to 2000/XP/Vista any
USB drive is considered Removable, not fixed. Because of this the installer
will not allow a drive of this type to be used for installation. Only SCSI &
SATA (eSATA) drives have the capability to be used for installation.

Many thanks but I don't think this will help. The internal hard drive
is SATA and already configured with Win XP and software for data
capture using a bespoke pci card. The user has already purchased the
external hard drive and is looking for a solution with this hardware
configuration. Is there any way of installing Win 2000 onto an external
hard drive?

Download the free Microsoft Virtual PC software and setup the
Guest OS (2000) on the external drive.

Not. Microsoft operating systems are not designed to boot from
external media; it would violate their licensing model.
