Install SQL Server??

My company is now running BCM on a workstation shared, the issue we are
having is the sharing capabilities. Although the the data is shared in the
Sales Department only(5 users), we are having a performance issue. All users
cannot use the data "live" without it slowing down the application. So we
have one user live and the others working off line and snycronizing at the
end of the day.

The BCM workstation has at least 2 GB of ram and running Windows XP Pro and
it does have the express SQL 2005 installed.

We eventually would like to have the entire company (18 users) sharing the
data, but until we cannot do this until we can get it up and running for the
sales department.

I have read several posts on this site. Some stating the full version of SQL
would be helpful??? Problem...No one within the company has experience with
SQL, so how difficult is it to install and maintain? Is SQL Server an
application or a operating system? Would it need to be a dedicated server?
The cost of the SQL server and would we have to purchase client licenses?

I need any and all input. Thank you.

It would probably help if you had a centralized SQL Server that the other
clients could connect to. The clients will still need SQL Express installed
but all of the clients will synch their data with the main SQL database. We
are running with 5 users at my company without any performance issues.

SQL server is an application that runs on a Windows Server, both requires
licenses. The SQL server doesn't need to be dedicated only to BCM, there
will be only one database on the server for BCM, you can run lots of other
applications and databases on the same server provided the server performs
well.

I don't have all the answers about licensing but using BCM like the above
described scenario works great for us.
