Some of the advice I'm reading here indicates part of my
problem of not getting connected to the internet with one
of my computers is that SP1 should be installed. I have
downloaded sp1aexpress_usa to a CD and tried to install
on the down computer. It says I need an internet
connection to finish the install, but that's the problem
I'm trying to fix. Is there a way around this?

The computer is assigned an IP by my router and can ping
itself, but not other computers in the workgroup nor the
router.

You've got the express version. It's a small program that you run to
connect to the Internet, download the rest of the service pack, and
install it.

The full service pack is available here, under "Network Installation":

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

Download it on another computer and burn it to a CD. It's really big
(125 MB), so that's only practical if the other computer has a
high-speed Internet connection.

I'm not aware of any fundamental TCP/IP problem in Windows XP that
installing Service Pack 1 will fix. The original version of XP should
be able to ping other computers and the router.
