Install of .net framework broke IE6

Hello all,

I downloaded and installed .net framework version 2 and now cannot get any
microsoft, google and some other websites in my internet explorer 6. I have
a windows 2000 pro machine with all the latest updates. I had my security
software turned off during the download and install. The browser window
that was left open during the install can still browse microsoft pages, but
any new browser window that opens up gets the following at the bottom:

Downloading from site res://C:\Winnt\system32\shcoclc.dll/dnserror.htm and
then displays "Cannot find Server" at the top of the page.

If I uninstall .net framework 2, I can then browse the internet using IE 6.
What could possible have happened and how can I fix it so I can use IE 6??

Thanks.

Hi Gale,

There are two steps to do and I hope it will solve your problem:
1= Try to clear your caches and delete your internet files and cookies, if
you have a favorites sites try to save them to another folder then you can
import them back after all the installation procedure was successful.
Scan your computer for malwares and viruses to be sure nothing interfering
in the installtion scenario and run the chkdsk.exe to repair any corrupt core
system files may hindering the installtion or damaging something else!.

2 = Open the Run command and type this:
C:\Winnt\system32\ click [OK] on the new window locate the
shdoclc.dll and delete it, then Reboot your machine the system file
protection (SFP) will detect and replace the file with a new one.
while the installation you don't need any runing innthe background or
opened window just the installation program should run in the background!.
also excute this command on your machine after the installation if still no
luck to repair the winsock:
RUN => netsh winsock reset click [OK] and reboot then try to surf.
=== Note perform each step one at a time and see if this will help.
HTH.
Please let us know your result.

I tried to delete shdoclc.dll, but it won't let me, says it is in use.

Hi Gale,
Did you try in Safe Mode and loged as Admin.
Try to take the ownership of the file and then delete it:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320046

Also try the Deltree command in CMD.exe command prompt to delete the file.
DELTREE [/Y] [drive:]path
deltree /y c:\shdoc.dll

If it didn't delete then try to download this tool and try delete :

HTH.
Please let us know.

OK, I logged in, in safe mode and deleted it and rebooted. Now I cannot get
any websites at all and there is no longer a shdoclc.dll file when I search
for it. I will restart again and see if that will work.

Hi Gale,
Then try to repair IE, it may corrupt or has a damaged file like shdoclc.dll:

Please report back your findings.

OK, I uninstalled .net framework 2 and I can get my webpages again. I have
made a copy of the shdoclc.dll as it seems that .net framework 2 changes it
as it has a different date on it when I get done installed the framework.
Would it work if I just replaced the working one with the copy after
installation?

Well try the installation first and see if things gone to plane, you may not
need to install the copy!.
Then if no joy try to install the copy and Reboot.
Please report back.

OK, I installed .net framework and when done, couldn't get any sites. I
then booted into safe mode, removed the corrupt shdoclc.dll and put the one
that worked in its place. Rebooted the machine and still no good. Cannot
get microsoft or google websites along with some other ones. Although
www.srt.com comes up.

Well if your Netframework is working and some other websites, it may be while
the installtion your favorites site is gone or you may need to delete the *
index.dat * and get a fresh one or let the system recreate it.
Also have a look into your Hosts File you need to clear/remove the entries
if any found.
Did you try the chkdsk!.
and the * netsh winsock reset * in the run command.
Also see if assinging thses site into the trusted site may help to eliminate
the DNS failure early and look for other.

P.S what Security applications you are runing, just curious to know.

I fixed it. When I installed the framework, it corrupted my profile. I
built a new profile and now everything is fine :)

Thanks.
