When I insert a video clip, the window appears black and no video plays. The mpeg plays outside PP in Windows Media Player. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Stupid question, but have you tried it in Slide Show View? Videos don't
display in Normal View.
What version of PowerPoint are you using, and what is the source of the
video file? Also, what is the file format?
When you inserted the video, you were asked if you wanted it to run
automatically? Did you respond Yes?

I am using PPt 2002. The movies are mpeg files and play
without a problem in Windows Media Player. They won't
play in Slide Show View or otherwise. I have tried

When did you last update your video driver? If the video was successfully
inserted, but won't display, the places to start are: 1. update the video
driver, 2. update to the current version of DirectX, 3. lower Hardware
Acceleration.

latest version and Hardware Acceleration has been
lowered, but the problem persists. Any other advice?

What version of DirectX do you have? Go to Start > Run and type dxdiag.
The dialog will tell you whether you have version 9.
Also, what version of Windows are you running? If it's Windows XP go to
Start > Run and type mplay32.exe to open the MCI player. Locate your video
file and play it. Does it play?

You may be on to something. I have Direct X 9.0b and
Windows XP. However, video won't play in the MCI player.

If it doesn't play in mplay32.exe it ain't a gonna play in PowerPoint.
Sounds like you are missing a codec on your system. What is the source of
the video files? If they are from a camera, it's very possible that the
camera manufacturer uses a proprietary codec. Contact them. If you created
them yourself in some software, try encoding them differently. See the
tutorial at http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm
for the full scoop on codecs, etc.

I am having similar issues. I am imbedding video in a PP slide but i
won't play it. A message to the effect that a video.vsdx(?
compression issue exists above the blank insert box on the slide.

Convert the avi file to wmv format - higher quality, smaller file. Only
problem is simultaneous display on both monitors (laptop and projector)
sometimes doesn't work.

Just built a ppt presentation with two mpeg video clips on a new laptop running XP Pro and Office XP. Videos ran fine with a click on the slide. Edited one of the videos using Windows Movie Maker which produced a wmv file, no other options. Inserted the wmv file into my presentation. Now the other mpeg clip will not play. PowerPoint will not allow mpeg to be inserted in the slide. mplay32 no longer plays mpeg files. As a work around, I was using my Office 2000 ppt to edit my presentation but it also went south. mplay32 does not play mpeg in ppt 2000 now. Microsoft support gave me a "sorry about that" your files are contaminated. Tried to play orgininal mpeg from their CDs but they failed too. How can a file on a CD-R become contaminated? The files play in Media Player and QuickTime. What's happening? Is there a fix?

I think your MCI settings have become a mess. See

I am not anywhere near the level expertise of the MVP guys who provid
such dedicated support to this board (thanks guys, we really appreciat
your efforts), but I have seen a similar problem at a meeting and i
desperation tried this workaround and it worked!
If you are using Windows XP open Windows movie make
(Start>Accessories>Windows Movie maker), start a new project. Impor
your video file, drag it to the storyboard. Choose save to m
computer.Follow the prompts. Now insert that movie into PowerPoint.
