inserting symbols

My daughter is doing a project on genotypes. One genotype is for
colorblindness. She wants to insert a subscript "c" high on the "X"
chromosome. So far all we can do is "Xc". We want the "c" to be very small
and up, like the degree symbol would be.

Select the c and Format | Font check to be superscript under the Effects
option.
 
That is superscript, not subscript. Select the c and press Ctrl+Shift+= or
use Format | Font | Superscript.
