When I try to insert a filen name and pathway into the footer of a document,
I get FILENAME \p and it doesn't update to include any information. Has
anyone ever had this happen? Is there a solution......

Type FILENAME \p , select what you just typed, and
press Ctrl+F9 to make a field out of it. Then you
should see something like { FILENAME \p } . Select
the field and press F9 to update it. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832897 "The
FILENAME field does not automatically update when
you open a document in Word" for more information.

Awesome.....but it doesn't even put the file name into the document. It is
almost like there is something on my normal template that got switched off.
It leaves it as FILNAME\p and won't even put the name of the file (or
pathway, or page number, anything that is auto text) into the document.
Thoughts?

Sounds like you inserted the filename field into a new document that has
not yet been saved, which means the document does not yet have a
filename, so what exactly do you expect the filename field to display?

Or you are displaying fields rather than their content - press ALT+F9 to
toggle the display.
