Inserting a word

When I type a document and need to go back and insert a
word or a character I can't. I mark the spot where I want
to make the insertion and instead of inserting the
additional word it erases typed text that follows where I
marked.

I feel that I have something in the formatting wrong but
do not know what. Help

Press the Insert Key to goggle the "insert" mode.

you need to press the insert button... to turn it off so
that you can insert without erasing your other work.
