Is there any way to set a chunk of selected text as locked or
protected in an otherwise editable document?

Use Paste>Special and paste it as a picture.

If you paste it as a picture, you wont be able to edit it in future. Other
alternative to this is:

- Insert section break (continious) before and after the text
- go to tools> protect document
- under "Editing Restrictions", check "Allow only this type of editing in
the document"
- in the drop down menu, select " Filling in forms"
- click on "Select sections"
- Only check that section no in which you have text
- click on OK and start enforcing

waiting for reply..!

That is not very secure. My suggestion is to paste it as a picture, but keep
a copy of the pasted text as text. If changes are needed, make them to the
text & repaste.
