Insert object - as icon

I inserted a Word object on one of my slides. I set it to display as an icon,
because I did not have enough room on the slide to display the data. I did
not create a link to the document because some machines that will display the
slideshow will not have this Word document; so I embedded the object. I can
double click the icon while I'm not running the slideshow and it opens just
fine. But I am not able to double-click the icon while the slideshow is
running. Why can't I?

You need to set the object's animation for it to open during slide show.
Which version of PPT are you using?

I'm using Powerpoint 2003

Thanks. I posted these instructions recently for opening an Excel file from
PPT. I just changed Excel to Word in the text below -- so if you see the
word Excel anywhere, it's just a miss on my part.

Right-click the Word file and choose custom animation. In the custom
animation pane, choose Add Effect|Object Actions|Open.

Now play your slide show. When you click the mouse, the Word document should
open in Word. Note that this opens the Word file when you click the mouse,
no matter where you click the mouse. Just a plain ol' mouse click, you know?

You could also do this with a trigger if you prefer. That means you'd
actually have to click an object on the slide -- like a picture or an
autoshape or a fake button or even the Word file itself -- to open up the
file in Word. To do that, follow the same instructions above to add the
Open "animation" and then double-click the animation effect in the custom
animation task pane. Go to the Timing tab.
Click Triggers
Click "start effect on click of"
Choose the Word file. (It's probably called something like "object 3.")
Click OK.
Test the file. Remember, you have to click on the Word file on the slide to
open it.
