Insert Manual Page Breaks

To everyone,

I have a text file report which lists each product by country. My
report uses “/â–¡â–¡â€(a back slash with 2 little square boxes next to it)
to mark the beginning and end of each product but it does not put a
page break in between each product.

To insert a manual page break between each product in the report, I
tried to use Word 2003 to “find†this special character (““/â–¡â–¡â€) and
then “replace†it with a manual page break (“^m).

But Word’s got problem finding this special character (““/â–¡â–¡â€) and so
I am unable to insert a manual page break in my report.

The symbol “/□□†is a non-printing character in the report.

I would appreciate your advice and answer please.

You could try selecting one of the nonprinting square boxes and pressing
Alt+X to see what Unicode glyph number is returned.

hi suzanne,

unfortunately I am unable to return the unicode for the non-printing
square boxes when I pressed Alt+X in word 2003. however, I have been
told that there are a number of non-printing characters in Word, all
of which appear as nulls, or ascii character zero.

0020 is the Unicode character for a space. Do you still see the square boxes
if you hide nonprinting characters (some older or more awful fonts display
spaces as boxes this way--very distracting)?

(the square boxes are represented by letter Y with two little dots at
the top of the letter. The letters look like unicode (hex) 0178 in
Word.)

the little square boxes don’t go away even though I try “hide†the all
the paragraph marks in word.

Unicode 0178 is 159 ASCII, which in the Symbol font is a box such as you
describe. That type of box is typically used by Word for an "I can't print
this" character--in this case representing a font space in which there is no
defined character. I don't know that that helps at all, but there it is.

hi suzanne,

thanks for your help. the problem is solved by using notepad or
wordpad to find the special nonprinting character i was looking for
and replace it with something unique. once i have done that, word
2003 is used to replace the unique character with a manual page break.
