In am using Word 2003. I have 20 separate files each refering to a chapter. I need to put these 20 files into the one file so as it can be saved into a PDF format. What I am concerned about is that it may upset the apple cart as the each file is large - finished product of the 20 files is about 340 pages - about 65-70,000 kb. Average file is about 2,500kb and the biggest is about 12,500. Can Word handle such a big file. There are screen shots, graphics and text on each of the pages. The end result needs to be one PDF file. Any hints, tips and or tricks for this event to be successfull. Thanks to all who reply. Nervously awaiting.

Word can handle documents of thosands of pages and file sizes of tens of
megabytes. 340 pages is child's play. The PDF conversion may take a while :)

You may find the boiler.zip file on the downloads page my web site a useful
tool for combining groups of files.

I suggest you create a master document, linking all sub-
documents in the master. If you create a master it only
shows a link to the individual sub-documents and not the
complete doc until you go to outline view and expand the
master document to include all sub-documents. Then convert
this output to a .pdf file.

Thanks Graham, I am trying this macro, but when I run it there are no files to select. I have copied a few files over to My Documents (c:\) to test run it but to no avail. I have put the boiler in Document & Settings .... \ .... Startup. What's gone wrong? The macro looks good, but ??? Thank you and thanks to all the other who have replied, looking at each of them, but this macro may do the trick. Cheer

Did you read the file that accompanies the template, which explains which
folder to use for your documents, and how to change it to a choice of your
own?

By default it uses a folder called C:\My Documents. This is a hangover to an
earlier operating system and is NOT the My Documents folder created under
(say) Windows XP.
