insert button on keyboard in word 2007

Toggling the insert key does not allow me to go from insert to overstrike
modes in MS word 2007. So far I've had to use the mouse and place
insert/overstrike in the toolbar at the bottm and use the mouse (time
comsuming). Is there a fix? I am in compatibility mode.

In earlier versions, I'd suggest you look at Tools | Options | Edit and make
sure that "Use the INS key for paste" was not checked. Presumably there is a
similar option in Word 2007.

In Word 2007, the INS key is by default disabled. It turned out that
accidentally switching to overtype was a big support issue, so MS
decided to disable it by default.
To enable it: Office button, Word Options, Advanced, Editing Options
section, check "Use the Insert Key to control overtype mode". Click OK
I also suggest then to right-click the status bar and select "Overtype"
from the menu that pops up. This will show you the status of the Insert
key in Word's status bar.

Hi Tracy,

There are two settings in the Word options that basically toggle each other. If you use Alt, T, O, A to get to the advanced options
in the 'Editing options' section you can turn on the
"Use the Insert key to control overtype mode"

that will turn off the 2nd choice in the advanced option if you
scroll down to the 'Cut, copy and paste' section of
'Use Insert Key for Paste'

If you turn off the 2nd option it doesn't turn on the first one :)

If you right click on the status bar and choose 'Overtype' to be displayed you can change the Insert/Overtype state by double
clicking that choice on the status bar after that.
