Insattling new Modem

I am not technical.............Just recently installed a new modem. The
Tech in the shop told me Windows XP would probably recognize and install the
software. Fine, that's apparently what it did. I was able to connect via
dial up straight away and everything works fine, but I notice that whereas
my old Modem was running at 48 kbs this new one runs at 45.2 kbs. Is this
just because it's a different brand or do I need to do something more.
