Following download of antispyware software and following pressing the 'run'
button a dialog box comes up with the following error message ' Error reading
set-up initialisation file'. Can anybody advise what to do next?

Hi cynkie,

Clear temp files, and temporary internet files.
Empty your IE cache and your other temporary file folders, eg: c:\temp,
c:\windows\temp
or
C:\Documents and Settings\<name>\Local Settings\Temp (the path to your temp
folder will change depending on your name) - sometimes programmes can be
hidden in there - watch out for mysterious *.exe files or *.dll files in
those fºlders.

One possibility is that the downloaded installer file is cºrrupt.

Here is the link for the Windows installer.

Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&displaylang=en

And then download a fresh copy
of the installer by following the download links from
http://www.microsoft.com/spyware/

Then try running the new installer.

Did you also clear the OS temp folder? One way to do this is with Disk
Cleanup--Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup.

Any chance of getting a copy of the download file via a different ISP--on a
CD from another machine, for example?

You are saving the file locally before running it? I know this seems inane,
since otherwise it is simply run from the TIF, but it seems to make a
difference.
