initial startup screen

Just installed W2K on and IBM X40 notebook PC. Every time it starts the
is first a black and white screen with:
Windows starting ...
and under this a line of short vertical gray bars, these bars are filled
in progressively from left to right THEN the regular W2k white splash
startup screen appears.

What causes that initial screen? Noticed on another system with XP, it
does this same thing but only sometimes, on the X40 it's all the time.

Thanks

I think that it always does this. At least here.

Sometimes during the video mode switches that happen
during startup, the screen is effectively "off" and you
just aren't seeing them. On faster machines, it may happen
so rapidly you don't see it at all.

Your XP system may be faster, and/or uses a video card
and display that reacts faster and thus has time to display
the progress bar.
