I have Windows 2000 Professional. I spend ages trying to find mails and
files on my PC hard drive or office server. and I'm looking for a good
search tool for e-mail and files that's faster than the built in Win 2000
search system which is much too slow for me....... I'm aware of the file
indexing facility in Win 2000 but I can't get it to work. Power management
on my notebook kicks in and disables it. I've played around with Power
management but can't get the right setting to allow indexing to complete.

A different approach would be to use 3rd party software. I've seen a good
review in this article for "Office Retriever"

My questions are:-

If I rely on Win 2000 and I can get indexing to work, will it speed up
searches and by how much?
Will Win 2000 indexing work on files on my company's server as well as on my
hard drive?
Am I better off going for a 3rd party solution?
Will Office 2003 have better/faster e-mail/file searching capabilities?

Plug in the power cord and let it run until its done.

Yes, and it can't be determined except by comparing "before" and "after"
search times. Thats like asking if I increase my cars horsepower will it
go faster and if so how much faster will it be.

Yes

Than what? I'd have to say yes for lack of alternatives.
