info on system restore w.xp home
Where can I find information about system restore in win.xp home sp2?I am
looking for information whether or not my files and folders will be saved if
there are .exe and .cab extensions with other items to be saved in my
documents folder.I have looked in microsoft sites and a few more tech sites
and still cannot find a firm answer to what I am needing to know.

Thank you Ted,I'm still not sure whether my .exe and data folders will be
lost if they are moved to My Documents.I understand that My Documents folder
is not changed to previous restore date, but system restore monitors these
extensions and from what I understand they will be set back. What I am unsure
of is will they be lost if they are moved to My Documents folder that is not
monitered.I have checked with microsoft and tech was unsure and so was hp
support.I always backup files and folders every other day but I never thought
about losing optical drives but I now know to backup everything from now on.I
don't need to lose important folders with these extensions.Any understanding
of this issue? And thanks again for the reply.captna

I think I see what's getting you confused. System Restore monitors
specific system and user files (not all .exe files, for example) that
are stored in places like the Windows folder. Offhand, I can't think of
any monitored file that you would be able to successfully store in My
Documents, even if you wanted to.

The site of MVP Bert Kinney is excellent.

No they won't be saved. System Restore restores the operating system only,
and does nothing for your applications, data files, etc
Do not make the mistake of thinking of System Restore as a substitute for a
regularly scheduled backup regimen. That's not its purpose and it's not what
it is. It's only a way of prividing a quick and easy reversal of changes
recently made in your Windows configuration.

A zipped file is a data file. As I said, System Restore does not back up
data files. I urge you to reread the last paragraph I wrote below,
especially these words: "Do not make the mistake of thinking of System
Restore as a
substitute for a regularly scheduled backup regimen. That's not its purpose
and it's not what it is. It's only a way of providing a quick and easy
