Infinite startup loop resulting from w32.blaster.worm

When my system was attacked by the w32.blaster.worm virus
on 8/12/03 (unknown to me at the time that it was a
virus), after the second reboot, I ran the update program
which looks for windows updates and got a list which began
with I believe a service pack update. I am not sure what
it was but the install began with a backup or copy of the
current config prior to completing the install. I did not
get through the process because in the middle I received
the RPC countdown to shutdown message.

Unfortunately, because the system was shutdown in the
middle of the download/install, it did not come up
properly. I loop from the IBM screen with F1, F11, F12
(recovery, etc.) to the Windows splash screen, blank
screen and back to IBM.

I attempted to start in safe mode. No option in safe mode,
including go back to a previous version, works. I
attempted every one.

Because the system is from IBM with preloaded OS, their
only remedy is to run recovery which reformats the disk
and reloads the original software. You do not get
original operating system CDs with the IBM machine.

I attempted the reboot from diskette, however, that
requires a Windows CD. I do not have a Windows 98
bootable disk.

Microsoft does not seem to have a venue to request a copy
of XP for this issue without the hourly support fee. I
would gladly take all the steps to rid my machine of the
virus if only I could load Windows XP Home.

Any ideas?

Borrow a friend copy of XP OEM CD, and use your Product Key to install.
This will turn on the normal version of PA, so you'll have to Activate
your new install with MS, which should take a couple of seconds over the
internet.

Alternatively, call up IBM and see what options for this they provide.
They are the one that support your preload version of Windows, not MS.
Had you paid for MS support to answer you, that's the answer you would
have got for your money.
