Indexing Service and Network Drive

Hello All,
I was hoping someone could cast some light on some issues with the XP
indexing service.

I'm trying to index a 40 Gig network drive that contains a mixture of
office files, visio files, text docs and a multitude of other
extensions. I've loaded the Visio Ifilter (and a pdf iFilter) and set
my machine off indexing. I have set this up on two machines, one where
i indexed the whole drive from the root (\\servername\sharename) and
the other where I manually entered each directory under sharename (i.e.
\\servername\sharename\dir). I used my own username/password (with the
domain prefix) and restarted the service to commence indexing.

I left both machines overnight and they both created a 330MB index with
52000 files indexed. The files to index column showed just 1 file to
index.

If I now start a search within explorer by right clicking on that drive
and selecting search and performing a search for say 'lagals' (a word
or phrsae in the file), it will whirr away for 5 or 6 hours and return
a pageful of results. If I do the same inside the indexing service
'query the catalog' i get only 6 results but this is instantaneous.

The whole purpose of this was to be able to quickly find which visio
diagrams (and other docs) had specific machine names in them. This
does not seem to be happening.

My questions are:

1) Why does the windows explorer search take so long if I have
previously indexed the whole drive? I'd expect a 'rush' of results and
then it to whirr away looking for more in unindexed or 'newly modified'
files.

2) Why do I only get 6 results in the 'query the catalog' page? Is
this case sensitive? It doesn't seem to be.

I've searched newsgroups and the microsoft website and ensured that the
'index files with unknown extensions' is ticked. I'm unsure why this
is playing up. If I go to the 'query the catalog page' and search on
@unfiltered=true, then i get 1800 docs (could be due to antivirus?) but
this is only 2 % of the files so this should cause such a big
difference in the 6 results versus page of results.

Thanks i advance for any help anyone can give me.
Rgds

If this isn't the correct group for this question could someone advise
on a more relevant group?
Thanks
Dan
