How do I generate an index automatically in Word 2003?

Type the word 'index' into the help box in the upper right corner and
press Enter. In the list of topics, click "About creating an index".
After that, you might click "Create an index", which has step-by-step
instructions.

After that, read the article

more information, maybe more than you want.
