Index for Word 2000

Hello All,

I am trying to create an index for a rock climbing
guidebook. I have used a heading style for the name
heading of the climb description. I have marked each of
the index entries.

I have a Contents page at the front of the book that
details all the climbing areas/location.

Do I need to use switches in the climb headings to enable
the Index of climb names at the end of the book to sort
the ersults into columns of text.
First column with the climb name e.g. BUNG
Second column with climb grade e.g. 22
Third column with climbing area e.g. Morialta
Fourth column is the page number

The mark I have used is eg {XE "Bung Morialta 12"}
Each of these columns will be dotted tab leaders. Eg:
NAME GRADE AREA PAGE
Bung......22....Morialta.......12
Cioch.....12....Morialta.......6
If I toggle the current Index field it shows:
{INDEX e".........."\c"2"\z"1033"}.

How do I get Name, Grade, Area & Page in distinct columns.

Any help would be much appreciated

I don't believe Word is capable of automatically generating an index in the
format you require (but note that you do not need to insert the page number
manually; it's Word's job to figure that out). Although it is possible, by
pasting, to incorporate tab characters in the XE fields, and you can set
tab stops in the necessary places in the Index paragraph style, this is all
for naught because Word converts tab characters in the XE field into spaces
in the Index field.

Many thanks to Chuck and in particular Suzanne for their
replies. I had a feeling there was no easy solution which
Suzanne confirmed.

I thought about it and came up with an agricultural
solution that works..

In the 'marked' fields that generate the index I separated
the text but using an obscure character (the tilde ~). I
formatted the index fields with the tab stop positions and
dotted leaders. I then went find and replace the tilde
(~) in the index with a tab (^t). As I said agricultural
but it worked.

Thanks for the feedback; we can add this technique to our toolbox. Be aware
that you will lose the tabs every time you update the index, but as long as
you're willing to rerun the replace each time, this solution should work.
