Index entries

I am using Word 2000 with ME. I am indexing a long document and when
I create an index entry (within brackets), it remains in the text even
though I may toggle on and off the show/hide button. In otherwords, I
can't get rid of the index entries which are now adding pages to the
orginal document. How do I get them to remain as index entries
without showing up in the text--except in the "show" mode?

Hi, Don,

Look into Tools > Options > View and clear the check box for "Hidden text".

The show/hide button toggles the state of the "All" check box, but any of
the others that are separately checked don't change along with it.
