The free Index.dat Suite from www.it-mate.co.uk/support/idsuite.asp allows
you to view or delete index.dat files.

These are mostly history recording files. Things like URLs
and Cookies and MRU(most recently used) are kept in files
of this type. You can open the file and delete it's
contents or get something like MRU Blaster which is free
and will do a good job of deleteing this stuff. You can
also clear most of it yourself. When your IE browser is
open click tools\internet options and the on the general
tab you can click the delete cookies, delete files, and
clear history buttons. This only cleans up some of your
tracks and there are techniques for stopping the recording
of your tracks but this requires regsitry editing and you
need to know a little bit about what you are doing before
messing with the registry. If you want to attempt them
then e:mail me. You should also turn off the show friendly
URLs and the autocomplete. Keep smiling.

The index.dat wont delete because it is in use when you
log on However you can create another user account with
admin rights log on to that account and then delete the
file in your primary user account from there
5 MB is not that much why brother?

You may be interested to know, Index.dat Suite has been updated to
v2.3.5

http://www.it-mate.co.uk/support/idsuite_download.asp

v2.3.5 is currently available as an update only until bug's present in
future versions have been verified as fixed (unfortunately, I do not
have NT, 2K or XP so am relying on an alt.comp.freeware member to
verify bug's for these platforms have been fixed). All .bat file's
generated with this version should be checked for errors prior to use.
